Slight confession here: we’ve got it bad for Tatras. From their fantastic body lines to their ahead-of-their-time engineering, (heck, they have an air-cooled V8 in the rear!), we’re obsessed. Like starting to stalk them obsessed. With the Tatras featured as one of the classes at this year’s Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, we figured we’d get to see a couple of them turn up at Monterey car week’s local events. We figured the majority of them were trailer queens and not really the daily drivers that we love to see. Boy were we wrong… really, really wrong – and we were delighted to be proven otherwise.Little Car Show. This Tatra was not exactly a little car compared to the others in attendance, but we loved being able to get up close and personal with it. This was one of the first we saw that would later be on the lawn at the Concours d’Elegance.
We next had a chance to see them at the Tour d’Elegance. We love the Tour d’Elegance, a fantastic driving event, where the cars that are participating in the Concours d’Elegance cruise around the Monterey Peninsula on a set course and end up on Ocean Ave., in Carmel-by-the-Sea where they stop for a few hours so car nuts like us can see them up close. The amount of people at this event is staggering, and at times that makes it challenging to get decent pictures, but with a little luck and a lot of patience, we managed to capture these beauties.Coucours d’Lemons. The Tatra is not a lemon by our standards, but heck, most of the cars at the Concours d’Lemons are not lemons to us either, just fantastic and eccentric automobiles. This is also a Tatra that would later be on the lawn at the Concours d’Elegance, but little did we know at the time would end up being one of our favorites memories of the whole Monterey Car Week.
What’s that in the distance? (*rubs eyes and grabs camera*). There is NO WAY that we are seeing what we are seeing. Maybe we have gone car crazy from being immersed in gorgeous cars all week. As Sara hangs out the window with the camera, our wildest dreams are confirmed. Yep, that is a Tatra off in the distance. We were coming home on the 101 freeway, the Monday after Monterey Car Week, and saw the 1947 Tartra T87 that we had seen at both the Tour d’Elegance and at the Concours d’Lemons cruising back down to Southern California. Automotive euphoria does not even begin to describe what was going on in the car with Sara and I. It is not often that you hear of a Concours car (of any kind) driving home from the show, and to discover that one of our favorite Concours cars was really a daily driver ended up being the best moment of the whole week, not to mention the most AMAZING street spot we’ve ever had!
